About About Pipelines

About Pipelines explains, in plain language, how oil and natural gas pipelines in Canada are planned, built, operated, inspected and kept safe, and what people who live and work near them need to know.

About Pipelines is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated on behalf of the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), any pipeline company, utility or regulator. It does not sell anything, and it does not represent the views of the industry.

What the site contains

  • Reference pages and blog articles first published by CEPA. The Pipeline 101, safety, prevention, emergency response and environment sections, and the articles on the blog, were written and published by CEPA. Each one is credited to CEPA with its original date where known. They reflect the industry association's perspective and the facts as they stood when written; figures such as pipeline lengths and incident statistics may have changed since.
  • Guides written by About Pipelines editors. The guides are written independently, credited to About Pipelines editors and dated.

Editorial standards

  • Facts in our guides come from primary sources wherever possible: the Canada Energy Regulator, Natural Resources Canada, provincial regulators, the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, published regulations and standards, and public safety information from one-call centres and utilities.
  • Each guide lists its sources. Figures are given with the year they refer to.
  • We do not invent statistics, quotes or experts. Where reliable information is not public, we say so.
  • Safety advice follows official guidance. In an emergency, the instructions of 911, your gas utility or the pipeline operator always come first.
  • Guides are reviewed and updated when the underlying rules or figures change.
